McGinnis![]() ![]() Though Aeneas has been commissioned by the gods to found a new Troy in Italy, a city destined to become the center of a world empire that will bring universal peace and law, he is weary of his journey. In the opening Book of the Aeneid, Virgil’s reluctant hero washes ashore on the North African city of Carthage. “Dido: The Tragedy of a Woman” retells the tragic tale of the “Aeneid,” but with some dramatic plot twists that allow it to function both as a timeless meditation on the universal issues of natural law, idolatry, and passion gone awry, and a modern commentary on relativism, utilitarianism, and abortion. ![]() Playwright David Lane has graced the Christian community with a formal, blank-verse play that takes up the war of gods and demons. ![]()

But inside the Sphinx Head Tomb, he and my mother, Ann Druyan, wrote books, essays, and screenplays together, working to popularize a philosophy of the scientific method in place of the superstition, mysticism, and blind faith that they felt was threatening to dominate the culture. At the turn of the last century it had been the headquarters for a secret society at Cornell called the Sphinx Head Tomb, but in the second half of the century some bedrooms and a kitchen were added and, by the 1980s, it had been converted into a private home where I lived with my wonderful mother and father. In vintage Robbins style, the plot whirls every which way, as the author, writing with unrestrained glee, takes potshots at societal pillars: the military, big business and religions of all ilks. Events are set in motion when one of the MIAs, dressed as a priest, is arrested with a cache of heroin taped to his body. Also part of the cast is a beautiful young woman who may or may not have Tanuki's blood in her veins (but definitely does have a chrysanthemum seed embedded in the roof of her mouth), and three American MIAs who have chosen to remain in Laos long after the Vietnam War. The novel begins with the story of Tanuki, a badgerlike Asian creature with a reputation as a changeling and trickster and a fondness for sake. ![]() Here we have weirdness personified, a quirky, outrageous concoction that is a joy to the imagination. ![]() Donald Barthelme once said, "Those who never attempt the absurd never achieve the impossible."
